Then the screams started. High pitched and wailing with terror, something was happening above the cloud cover and whatever it was, terrified him. Images of what had happened to the trading vessel just a few months earlier flashed through his mind, the blood and carnage wrought, unfathomable. A large explosion of sound, followed by a deep maroon light seeped through the cloud cover, like a bright light being swallowed by a monstrous beast, the rich colour only partially visible where the clouds were thinner. Many smaller explosions followed, a chain reaction of destruction that sent ripples across the sky. Screams like that of a banshee pierced his ears, causing Garrick to clutch at his helmet before looking up in dismay just as the clouds were forced open, pushing the hull of a giant wooden airship through, the engines on fire and a streak of billowing smoke leaving a trail of embers and thick haze in its wake. The Domarion, indomitable in its magnificence, crashed into the ground with a tremendous crunch, crushing all who stood under it. Pieces of wood and metal debris scattered everywhere, the ground was aflame with the burning of wood and corpses. Hundreds were dead in an instant. Garrick stared in disbelief at how many people had just been snuffed out of existence. The battle hadn’t even begun yet and already there had been innumerable casualties, the destruction he had just witnessed sending a shocked fear coursing through his body, his mind swarmed with terrible thoughts. They were all going to die.
